When life is busy, heart health can be easy to put off.
Between work, family, school drop-offs, community sport, caring for others and everything else that fills the week, many people only think about their heart when something feels wrong.
But the truth is, many heart health risks can be silent.
This Heart Week, from 4 to 10 May 2026, it is a good time to pause, check in, and have a conversation about one of the most important parts of your health. The Heart Foundation is encouraging Australians to “Never miss a BEAT” by booking a Heart Health Check with their GP.
At Vitality Pharmacy, we know that small conversations can lead to big changes. A blood pressure check, a chat about cholesterol, a question about family history, or a reminder to book in with your GP could be the nudge that helps protect your future health.
Why Heart Week matters
Heart disease remains one of Australia’s biggest health challenges. The Heart Foundation says heart disease is the single biggest killer of Australians, and more than one in five Australians aged 45 to 75 have an intermediate to high risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next five years.
The confronting part is that many people do not know their risk.
You can feel well, stay active, and still have risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking history, family history or age-related risk.
That is why Heart Week is not just for people who already have heart problems. It is for everyday Australians who want to stay well.
What is a Heart Health check?
A Heart Health Check is a 20-minute check-up with your GP that helps assess your risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next five years. Your GP may look at things like blood pressure, cholesterol, medical history, family history, lifestyle and other risk factors.
It is not about judgement. It is about understanding your personal risk and making a plan that suits your life.
That plan might include lifestyle changes, further testing, medication, regular monitoring, or simply knowing what to keep an eye on.
The silent risk: blood pressure
High blood pressure is often called a silent risk factor because many people do not feel any different when it is high.
You may not have obvious symptoms. You may not feel unwell. But over time, high blood pressure can place extra strain on your heart, brain, kidneys and blood vessels.
This is where your local pharmacy can play a helpful role.
A quick blood pressure check can be a simple starting point. It does not replace a full GP assessment, but it can help you know whether it is time to follow up.
If your blood pressure is higher than expected, your pharmacist may suggest checking it again, monitoring it over time, or booking in with your GP.
Who should think about a heart health conversation?
Heart health matters for everyone, but it is especially worth having a conversation if you:
- Are aged 45 or over
- Have a family history of heart disease
- Have high blood pressure
- Have high cholesterol
- Have diabetes
- Smoke or have smoked in the past
- Are carrying extra weight
- Are not as active as you would like to be
- Have been told you have kidney disease
- Feel unsure about your heart health risk
For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, heart health checks may be recommended earlier, so it is worth speaking with your GP about what is right for you.
Small changes can make a big difference
Heart health does not have to mean changing everything overnight.
For many people, it starts with one manageable step.
That could be:
- Taking a short walk most days
- Reducing salt in everyday meals
- Drinking more water
- Cutting back on smoking or vaping
- Checking your blood pressure
- Taking prescribed medicines regularly
- Booking a GP appointment
- Asking about cholesterol
- Getting support to manage diabetes
- Making sleep and stress management a priority
Your heart health plan should feel realistic. The best plan is one you can actually stick with.
