For two decades, riders, volunteers, donors and supporters from across Far North Queensland have come together for one remarkable purpose: helping local people access better cardiac care closer to home.
In 2026, the Australian Retirement Trust Cardiac Challenge celebrates its 20th year. From 19 to 21 September, cyclists and support crew will once again make the journey from Cairns to Cooktown, raising funds for much-needed cardiac equipment and services throughout Far North Queensland.
Vitality Pharmacy Warehouse is proud to support this important community event, and especially proud that our big boss and long-time Cardiac Challenge supporter, Nick Loukas, will be getting back in the saddle to take part once again.
Three days, 319 kilometres and one shared purpose
The Cardiac Challenge is a 319-kilometre cycling journey through some of Far North Queensland’s most spectacular and demanding landscapes.
Over three days, riders face winding roads, tropical rainforest, rolling hills and long hours on the bike as they travel from Cairns to Cooktown. While the physical challenge is significant, it is the purpose behind the ride that continues to bring people back year after year.
Funds raised through the event help the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation purchase vital cardiac equipment and support services for patients across the region.
This equipment can assist healthcare teams with diagnosing, monitoring and treating heart conditions. It also helps more patients receive essential care closer to home, reducing the need to travel long distances away from their families, communities and support networks.
Twenty years of making a difference
What began as a determined community fundraising effort has grown into one of Far North Queensland’s most recognised charity cycling events.
Over its history, the Cardiac Challenge has raised millions of dollars for cardiac and related health services. These funds have contributed to important equipment and resources, including cardiac catheter laboratories, imaging equipment, ECG machines, cardiac ultrasound equipment and specialist resources used by healthcare teams across the region.
Behind every piece of equipment is a person, a family and a community that benefits from having better healthcare available when it is needed most.
For people living in regional and remote communities, access to appropriate cardiac equipment can make a meaningful difference. It can help support earlier assessment, faster diagnosis and ongoing treatment, while allowing more patients to remain closer to their loved ones. For Nick, the Cardiac Challenge represents an opportunity to give back to the community and help improve health outcomes for people throughout Far North Queensland.
A long-time supporter of the event, Nick will once again join fellow riders on the road to Cooktown. His motivation is simple: heart conditions can affect any family, friend, colleague or member of our community, and every kilometre ridden can help bring better equipment, care and services within reach.
Taking on 319 kilometres requires months of preparation, early morning training rides, determination and plenty of encouragement. We are incredibly proud to see Nick continuing his commitment during this milestone year, and the entire Vitality Pharmacy Warehouse team will be cheering him on.
