As pharmacists, we have a lot of conversations with parents this time of year. And one thing we hear all the time is: “I know they need it… I just hate seeing them go through it. Because let’s be honest, watching your child get a needle isn’t easy. Even when you know it’s important, it can be upsetting for them… and for you.
That’s why I am so excited to share some fantastic news for Queensland families. In 2026, the Queensland Nasal Spray Flu Immunisation Program is making it easier than ever to keep our kids healthy.
What is the “nasal spray” vaccine?
The program uses a vaccine called FluMist. Instead of the traditional jab, it’s a quick, painless spray delivered right into the nose. It’s needle-free and absorbed so quickly that it still works even if your child sneezes immediately after!.
Free for children aged 2 to 5 years
The Queensland Government is providing this nasal spray vaccine for free to all children aged 2 to 5 years (inclusive).
This specific age group is being prioritised because they are at a higher risk of developing nasty complications from the flu, like pneumonia or painful ear infections, and they are often the “super-spreaders” who pass the virus to grandparents and the rest of the community.
FAQs from the pharmacy counter
Is it as good as the needle?
Absolutely. Research shows the nasal spray provides strong protection and is just as effective as the injectable vaccine at preventing severe disease.
Is the nasal spray safe for my child?
Yes—and this is something we take very seriously. This vaccine has a strong safety profile and has been determined to be safe and effective by the TGA here in Australia. While it is new to us in 2026, it has actually been used in millions of children overseas for many years, particularly in the UK and USA. The most common side effects we see are mild, such as a runny or blocked nose, a mild headache, or feeling a little tired. These usually pass quickly and are far less severe than the flu itself.
Will it give my child the flu?
No. It contains weakened viruses that mimic a natural infection to “train” the immune system, but they cannot cause the actual flu disease.
Can they get it with their other shots?
Yes, it can be given at the same time as other routine childhood vaccinations.
When and Where Can We Get It?

A Quick Note for Parents
While most kids aged 2–5 are eligible, some children with specific medical conditions might still be better off with the traditional injection. If you’re unsure, just have a chat with us at the pharmacy or your GP, we’re here to help you decide what’s best for your little one.
