Our guide to your options

As we move into flu season, one of the most important conversations we have in pharmacy is around prevention. Each year, influenza places significant strain on individuals, families, and the broader healthcare system. The good news is that we have effective, accessible options available, and understanding them allows you to make informed decisions for yourself and your family.

Vaccination remains the most effective protection

As in previous years, free influenza vaccinations are available to all Queensland residents aged 6 months and over.

Vaccination remains the most effective way to reduce your risk of catching the flu, lessen the severity of symptoms if you do become unwell, and lower the chance of complications, particularly for those more vulnerable.

It’s also important to remember that influenza is not just a bad cold. It can lead to serious respiratory illness, hospitalisation, and ongoing complications, especially in young children, older adults, and people with underlying health conditions.

Because flu strains change each year, the vaccine is updated annually to match what’s circulating. Getting vaccinated early in the season helps ensure you’re protected when cases begin to rise

Needle-free vaccination available for children

For children aged 2 to 5 years, the nasal spray influenza vaccine offers a clinically approved, needle-free alternative to the traditional injection.

One of the biggest challenges we see with childhood vaccinations is the distress that can come with needles. For many parents, it’s not just about getting it done, it’s about not wanting their child to experience pain or feel scared and develop a fear of healthcare settings.

The nasal spray option helps ease that concern. It’s a simple, non-invasive approach that reduces anxiety for both the child and the parent, and makes the whole experience far more comfortable.

Importantly, it allows parents to protect their child without putting them through an experience that could create ongoing fear or resistance. For many families, that shift makes a meaningful difference in how they approach preventative care.

Supporting your immune system alongside vaccination

While vaccination is your most important line of defence, it’s not the only way to support your health during flu season.

Everyday factors like stress, lack of sleep, and increased exposure to illness can place extra pressure on your immune system, which is why giving your body a bit of additional support can make a real difference.

Simple, evidence-based strategies such as maintaining good nutrition, staying well hydrated, getting enough rest, and using targeted supplements where appropriate can all help support normal immune function.

Some immune support products may also help reduce the duration and severity of common cold symptoms and keep your body more resilient during peak illness periods.

It’s not about replacing the vaccine, it’s about supporting your body from multiple angles. Taking this layered approach is often the most effective way to stay well throughout the season.

A tailored approach is key

There is no single approach that suits everyone…
