Supporting our community with COUCH
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and here at Vitality Pharmacy Warehouse we’re proud to support the incredible work of local cancer care organisations like COUCH (Cairns Organisation United for Cancer Health). Based right here in Cairns, COUCH plays a vital role in supporting those affected by cancer in our Far North Queensland community.
This month we’re not just wearing pink. We’re starting conversations, sharing information and reminding everyone to look after their own health and the health of those around them.
Why COUCH matters in our community
When someone receives a cancer diagnosis it affects every part of their life and their loved ones’ lives too. That’s where COUCH steps in. Their mission is simple but powerful: to improve the quality of life for people living with cancer in our region.
Through the COUCH Cancer Hub they offer access to allied health services, emotional support, integrative therapies, education and connection. Whether you’re going through treatment or caring for someone who is, COUCH provides comfort and care in a way that only a local organisation can.
As part of its growing services COUCH recently welcomed an on-site general practitioner, a significant step toward even more holistic support for clients during and after treatment.
Know the signs: What to look out for
Early detection of breast cancer saves lives. That’s why awareness starts with knowing what to look for and encouraging regular self-checks and medical screenings.
Here are some of the key warning signs of breast cancer:
- A lump or area of thickened tissue in the breast or underarm
- Any change in the size or shape of the breast
- Dimpling, puckering or redness of the skin
- Changes to the nipple such as inversion, discharge or rash
- Unexplained pain in the breast or armpit that doesn’t go away
If you or someone you care about notices any of these symptoms, don’t ignore them. Book an appointment with your GP. Early detection gives the best chance of successful treatment.
COUCH often supports individuals from the moment of diagnosis and throughout their treatment, offering services that help reduce stress, improve wellbeing and give people a safe space to talk through concerns.
